The only kid who doesnt leave on Wednesday afternoon for Catholic or Jewish religious instruction, Holling is stuck in school with Mrs. Baker. Even worse, she makes him read Shakespeare. Eventually Holling becomes aware of Mrs. Bakers unexpected talents and some of her troubles, especially the stress of waiting for her husbands return from Vietnam.
